Former Government Member of Parliament under the APNU+AFC administration, Charrandass Persaud has been officially accepted by the Indian Government as Guyana’s High Commissioner to India.
Mr. Persaud presented his credentials to the Indian Government along with other diplomats on Wednesday.
The Opposition APNU+AFC had written the Indian Government objecting to the appointment of Charrandass Persaud.
It was Persaud’s vote against his own government in Parliament that led to the success of a no-confidence motion which paved the way for a flurry of Court matters and elections that saw a change in government.
Just after his no-confidence vote, he left for Canada where he holds citizenship. He remained there until the change of government, returning recently to meet with senior government officials and accept his appointment as Guyana’s top diplomat in India.
In presenting his credentials to the Indian Government, Persaud spoke of the relations between Guyana and India over the years and the need for the further strengthening of those relations.
Guyana and India have shared diplomatic relations for over 50 years.
