A Chinese national working at the Cheddi Jagan Airport runway expansion site died on Thursday midday after he made his way into a swampy area while doing excavation works and was completely covered by mud.
Another worker was also trapped but managed to survive after being pulled from the area.
News Source understands that both workers are attached to the China Harbour Company which is carrying out the airport expansion plans.
The body of the worker, whose name has not been released, was pulled from the swampy area and taken to the Diamond Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The other worker who was trapped, remains hospitalized.
The expansion of the airport has been ongoing for months with the clearing of land and land filling in several areas.
An investigation has been launched into the tragedy.
