Chinese restaurant owner found murdered in Tuschen home

A popular Chinese restaurant owner was found murdered in his home at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, on Thursday night.

The body of 44-year old Liyan Jiang was found by the man’s friend, journalist Neil Marks, who was accompanied by ranks from the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

In a Facebook post, Marks said he was contacted by the deceased’s wife at 21:00hrs on Thursday night and she asked him to check up on her husband, since she had not heard from him since Wednesday. The woman resides and runs a business on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).

He said that upon arriving at the house, he observed the door open, and the light on. After making several calls for the man to no avail, Marks said he then contacted the Police.

Initially, only one officer had accompanied him to the premises, but they later called for back-up. Soon after, a patrol arrived, and according to Marks, “several Police officers came and we made the discovery.”

The Journalist said the man “was found with his hands tied and his mouth gagged and multiple marks of violence about the body. ‘Chiney man gone home,” a Policeman said. Mr Jiang was dead.”

He said too that police have since said that they are treating the matter as a robbery/murder.

Marks also alleged that several officers were seen taking stuff from the restaurant during their investigations.

“I stepped out of the house to the restaurant area as I tried to communicate the message to Jiang’s wife. When I returned inside, the Policemen were busy trying to sort themselves out in the freezer. I ignored it”, he said.

He continued that “I went outside of the building to be on the phone with our Chinese friends who were calling and to allow the Police to do their work. When I returned inside an officer was busy putting something under their shirt. When it was clear I could see, the officer returned the item. I don’t know who else picked up what”, adding that he then decided to ask a friend to remain in the restaurant and keep watch.

The man’s body was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and subsequently to the funeral parlour. His wife was allowed to identify the body today. He leaves to mourn, his wife and two sons.
