Chief Justice Ian Chang on Thursday declared that the appointment of Carol Sooba as the city’s town clerk was illegal and he has thrown out the appointment which was made by the Minister of Local Government.
The Chief Justice in his ruling quashed the appointment while pointing out that the Minister of Local Government should not have made the appointment.
City Hall and the Opposition Parties had expressed their concerns over the Sooba appointment for months. While several other more qualified persons applied for the position, they were all overlooked by the Local Government Minister, who at the time said he believed that Sooba was best suited for the position.
The Government had also indicated that it was not just looking at qualifications but also at experience. It was City Council Public Relations Officer Royston King, who had moved to the Courts over the appointment of Sooba. He had also applied for the position.
