Culture Ministry moves ahead with Inauguration plans; Independence eve flag raising cancelled

The Ministry of Culture has announced that this year’s annual Independence flag raising ceremony has been cancelled, but a massive cultural event will lead the inauguration ceremony on Independence Day at the Guyana National Stadium.

The government has put together a team to organise and execute the events to take place on May 26.

The team is being headed by retired Colonel Larry London who is being assisted by broadcaster Bobby Vieira and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Alfred King.

The May 26 events will see the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defense Force playing major roles as a number of Caribbean Heads of State are expected in the country at the time .

The first event on May 26 will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Independence arch on Brickdam. Eight wreaths are to be laid and will pay homage to former Presidents Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan along with the youths and women and trade union movement persons who fought for Guyana’s independence.

There will be the hoisting of the Golden Arrow Head and a military guard of honor in place to carry out the 21 gun salute.

Later that day, persons are expected to assemble at the Guyana National Stadium from 3pm for a cultural show with local entertainers to commemorate the anniversary and the President’s Inauguration.

The events will be televised live on the National communications Network (NCN).

The final event on May 26 will be an Independence toast and reception at the Pegasus hotel.

All activities including a major clean-up of Georgetown are being done on a voluntary basis.

Efforts are also being made to find and rehabilitate and replace the Independence Arch which was once located at Ruimveldt.

A National Secretariat is to be established for the planning of the 50th  Independence anniversary in 2016.
