A Cummings Lodge man who reportedly set his house on fire after brutally stabbing his wife to death, has also died as a result of burns that he sustained in the fire.
A police report said the incident took place at around 1:30 this morning at Second Street, Cummings Lodge on the East Coast of Demerara.
The murdered woman has been identified as 50-year-old Paula Abraham, while the dead reputed husband’s name has been given as Ishwar Singh. He was 46-years-old. He was known to be an abuser of alcohol and would often threaten the wife, relatives told investigator.
The daughter of the dead couple, Preeta Singh, told investigators that she was awakened by her mother’s screams this morning and noticed that the house was on fire. She said she immediately raised an alarm and ran out of the house, as neighbours rushed over to assist.
She said she noticed a sofa in the house being on fire, then her father was seen exiting the building with burns about his body. The Fire Service was summoned and the mother’s body was found in her bedroom after the fire was extinguished. The Police said blood stains were noticed on her clothes and there was a stab wound to the left side of her neck.
She was pronounced dead, while the reputed husband was taken to the hospital with severe burns about his body. He died this morning at the Georgetown Hospital.
The daughter told investigators that her father was an alcoholic and would habitually threaten the mother about taking her life in the home.
A full police probe is underway.
