Demerara Harbour Bridge to close for three full days from 24th July

The Demerara Harbour Bridge will be closed to all traffic for three full days from the the night of the 24th July to the 27th July.

The closure is to facilitate the logistical replacements for the replacement of one of the spans on the bridge and other related issues.

The Minister of Public Works will be meeting with companies and other key stakeholders likely to be affected by the bridge closure at a public consultation.

The consultation takes place on Wednesday afternoon at the Umana Yana. The event is open to the general public.

The closure will affect commuters on both sides of the Demerara river over the three days. It is expected that the operating hours for boats traversing the Georgetown to Vreed-en-hoop route will be extended.

Last year, the bridge suffered serious damages when a fuel tanker that was transporting fuel for the Guyoil company slammed into a section of the bridge. That accident resulted in the bridge being out of operation for a number of days.
