The Demerara Harbour Bridge will remain closed for the rest of today and possibly part of Tuesday as workmen are set to begin work later today to repair the damage to the bridge.
Management at the bridge was forced to close it after a tug and barge slammed into the bridge, shifting the pontoons and spans and throwing the alignment out of place.
The General Manager of the Bridge, Rawlston Adams told News Source that the repair works will not be able to start until noon today because of the current high tide.
He said a full investigation will be launched into the incident which occurred just before 1 o’ clock this morning.
The closure of the bridge forced commuters to turn to the speed boat service to get across the Demerara river.
Hundreds of commuters packed the Vreed-en-hoop stelling as speed boats traversed the waterways. The Police Force dispatched traffic ranks and other officers to the area to manage traffic and the early morning commute.
The Maritime Administration has indicated that it is likely it will allow speed boats to operate for longer hours today.
