The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has announced that members of the Disciplined Forces will cast their votes for the Local Government Elections on June 2.
For the wider public, voting will take place on June 12 in the majority of the 80 Local Authority Areas across Guyana.
In a notice published on its Facebook page, the Elections Commission said the date was set in keeping with the Local Authorities (Elections) Act, which provides the procedure for voting by specified disciplined forces.
Earlier in May, the Elections Commission indicated that there was no contest in 13 Local Authority Areas comprising some 98 constituencies.
Additionally, there will also be no contest in an additional 193 constituencies spread across several other Local Authority Areas. As such, there will be no voting in those areas.
Back in May, the Elections Commission granted approval for some 46 political parties, voluntary groups and individuals to contest the upcoming Local Government Elections.
In accordance with the Local Authorities (Elections) Act, the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Vishnu Persaud, notified the parties, voluntary groups and individuals that their titles, symbols and candidates have been approved for the June 12 Local Elections.
For many of the Local Authority Areas, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will be contesting in both the First-Past-the-Post and Proportional Representation components of the elections.
Local Government Elections were last held in 2018.
