June 12 is new date for Local Government Elections

The Minister of Local Government Nigel Dharamlall, has written to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission appointing Monday, 12th June 2023 as the date for the conduct of Local Government Elections in Guyana.

The new date follows the announcement by GECOM of its new work plan, which would make it ready to host local elections by the end of May.

Meanwhile, the Elections Commission is moving ahead with its workplan and is reminding political parties, groups and individuals seeking to contest the local elections that they have up until the 1st March to submit their symbols for the elections.

In a statement on Thursday, GECOM said contestants should submit their symbols to the GECOM High Street office. Those who reside in outlying Local Authority Areas (LAAs) can submit their symbols to GECOM’s registration office in their area.

Further, GECOM has warned  that any list of candidates submitted by any political party, voluntary group or individual candidate on Nomination Day without the pre-approved symbol will be deemed defective and the defaulting political party, voluntary group or individual candidate will be deemed ineligible to contest the Local Government Elections.

Over $1 Billion has been allocated to the Guyana Elections Commission in this year’s budget for the holding of Local Government Elections.
