17th April is new Nomination Day for Local Government Elections

The Guyana Elections Commission has announced the 17th April, 2023 as Nomination Day for all parties, organisations and individuals that intend to contest this year’s local government elections.

In an advertisement carried in today’s local newspapers, the Elections Commission also announced that those desirious of participating in the elections have up to 21 days before nomination day to submit their symbol to be used on the ballot paper.

It was pointed out however, that those political parties, groups or individuals that have already submitted symbols based on the previous deadline, do not need to resubmit their symbols.

The parties and groups and individual candidates are also expected to submit their list of candidates at the Registration Office in their area.

The Elections body recently announced the suspension of the Continuous Registration Exercise, to allow preparations to begin for the hosting of the local elections.

Local Government Elections are set to take place on the 12th June. The Elections were previously scheduled to be held on the 13th March, but GECOM was forced to change the date after the Opposition APNU+AFC moved to the Court to challenge the way the voters’ list was published.

GECOM CEO agreed that there was an error and therefore requested additional time to get the process correct, and to also address concerns about the demarcation of contitutiencies.
