Domestic murders in Guyana double but overall serious crimes on the decline

Domestic murders doubled in Guyana in 2025 when compared to 2024, Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum disclosed today, as he presented the crime report for the country at the launch of the Christmas Policing 2025 at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary. However, he noted that overall, serious crimes are on the decline.

He said while serious crimes have been on the decline over the last 10 years, the country’s murder rate remains a concern, with the majority of the victims (81%) being males, and the remaining 19%, being women.

During his virtual presentation this morning, the Crime Chief said disorderly murders account for the highest number of murders committed compared to other categories of murders. However, he said there has been a significant increase in domestic murders.

“Domestic murders doubled for this period, when compared to the previous year – that is from 13 in 2024 to 26 in 2025,” the Crime Chief reported.

It was also reported that in 2025, the highest percentage of murders were recorded in Region 4 A, while Region Two recorded the lowest percentage of murders.

On the issue of serious crimes, Mr. Blanhum reported that there were 801 serious crimes in 2025 compared to over 1000 for the corresponding period last year.

“The pie chart shows that 24% of the total crimes committed were in Region 4 A. In other words, Region 4 has the lion’s share of the pie. There are many factors that can be attributed to this state of affairs in Region 4A. For example, this region has a high population density, and is widely regarded as the commercial hub of the country,” he explained.

Trailing Region 4 A with the highest numbers of serious crimes are Region 3 and Region 4B, while Regions 8, 5 and 7 all have a small percentage of shared distribution of serious crimes, the Crime Chief said.

Zooming in on robberies, the Crime Chief said in a 10 year period, there has been a “declining trend” for all categories of robberies.

“Robberies with the used of firearm was the most prevalent type of robbery during the year 2025. This was followed by robberies with the use of other instrument and then robberies with aggravation. During the year 2025, similarly, to the previous statistics related to murder, Region 4 A has recorded the highest percentage of the robberies,” Blanhum reported.

He said the Guyana Police Force found that the majority of the robberies, particularly with the use of firearms, were committed by criminal elements between the period 6pm to 12am.

As a result, the Force has deployed additional resources during that period resulting in a reduction in a reduction.

In Guyana, break and enter and larceny remains the most prevalent criminal offence. Over a 10 year period, the year 2025 recorded the lowest number of break and enter and larceny occurrences, the Crime Chief reported.
