DPP withdraws murder charges against Cops who shot man during chase

Three months after two serving members of the Guyana Police Force were charged for murder over the shooting death of Festival City resident, Cecil Sampat, the Director of Public Prosecutions has withdrawn the murder charges.

The DPP reviewed the file against the two policemen, Corporal Godwin Thomas and Constable Troy Munroe.

A decision has been taken to institute a manslaughter charge against just one of the officers, Constable Troy Munroe.

The shooting incident took place on the 25th July as the Police chased behind a car that Sampat was in as a passenger.

The Police claimed that the driver of the car refused several warnings to stop and drove through a number of Police roadblocks.

The Police eventually opened fire on the car as it sped along Mandela Avenue. The driver was forced to stop as he was injured and his passenger was also injured.

They were both taken to the Georgetown Hospital where Sampat passed away after being in a critical condition. The driver has suffered injuries that has affected his mobility.
