A Foulis, East Coast Demerara Businessman on Friday denied being the owner of a shipment of cocaine in a large quantity of frozen fish and shrimp that was intercepted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport earlier this week.
The 32-year-old man, Kapil Haresh Thakurian, pleaded not guilty to attempting to ship 88 kilograms of cocaine to New York, when he appeared before City Magistrate Lerone Daly.
The man was represented by Attorney at Law Peter Hugh, who argued that the drugs were discovered in the shipment of fish before his client could have made a declaration.
He said in that case, no conclusion could be drawn that his client had knowledge of the illicit substance.
He begged the Magistrate to grant his client reasonable bail but that request was denied.
The accused will return to court on Friday August 26.
The cocaine was seized by agents of the Police Narcotics Branch on Tuesday evening just as the cocaine laden fish shipment was being processed through a local air cargo service.
Several long pellet like shaped packets of the cocaine were discovered in a number of the frozen fish. The packets were tightly wrapped in white tape and plastic and placed just above the backbone of the fish.
