
Passengers and staff were quickly ushered out of the Departure lounge at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport this morning after a fire, suspected to be of electrical origin, broke out in the ceiling of the check-in area at the departure lounge.
Persons were seen hurrying out of the building as the smoke quickly spread around the area and alarms went off glaring loudly.
In a statement, the Cheddi Jagan Airport’s management said the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded swiftly to the fire and the firemen were able to contain the blaze.
It was stated that the fire was first detected in an air conditioning unit .
The airport’s management said the fire prompted the immediate evacuation of passengers and airport staff to allow the GFS to conduct initial investigations, while confirming that there were no injuries to passengers or staffers.
At the time of the blaze, the check-in process was underway for a Caribbean Airlines flight and a Suriname Airways flight.
A full investigation is underway.
