Five Held for Suspected Smuggling of Haitians through Guyana

The Home Affairs Ministry said the Haitians are being investigated as part of a suspected human smuggling racket and trafficking in person ring. No other details were provided, but the Ministry has indicated that all of the Haitians are now in protective care.

Five Held for Suspected Smuggling of Haitians through Guyana

Five persons have been arrested and are facing questioning over the suspected smuggling of Haitian nationals through Guyana.

The Home Affairs Ministry announced today that a total of 26 Haitian nationals were found in a city hotel and in a bus along the Mabura road during two operations by law enforcement.

According to the statement, the group was made up of 19 adults and 7 children.

The Home Affairs Ministry said the Haitians are being investigated as part of a suspected human smuggling racket and trafficking in persons ring.  No other details were provided, but the Ministry has indicated that all of the Haitians are now in protective care.

Haitians would normally come to Guyana via Suriname or Panama and make their way to Brazil to take up farming jobs.

Hundreds of Haitian families have been migrating to Brazil over the past few years.
