Flooding in Rupununi forces several families into shelters

Heavy and consistent rainfall in Region Nine has resulted in significant flooding in a number of communities, forcing at least several families into shelters.

In a statement, the Civil Defence Commission said due to the consistent rainfall in the area, water levels continue to rise from deep South to the South Pakaraimas.

The Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Lethem Town Council (LTC) and Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (MLGRD), have operationalized shelter to house approximately seven (7) families. Affected residents have already been moved to the facility.

The CDC has also activated its Regional Disaster Risk Management Center (RDRMC) to serve as a secondary shelter to accommodate more displaced persons.

The CDC is also working with Regional and Municipal Authorities to deliver water purification tablets, water containers, cleaning hampers, and other essential supplies to residents of affected communities.

Two boats have also been deployed by the CDC to aid the RDC with its relief efforts.

The Hydrometeorological Service is predicting significant and consistent rainfall countrywide for the next 24 hours.

The Commission said it is monitoring all regions closely along with the regional bodies.

Residents of low-lying, flooded, and flood-prone areas are urged to be vigilant and to take precautions where necessary.

The National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) can be contacted 24 hours a day on telephone numbers 600-7500 or 226-1114 to report any impacts.
