Fmr. Coast Guard officers found Guilty of murder

Three former members of the Coast Guard were on Tuesday sentenced to death after being found guilty of the murder of 24-year-old gold miner Dweive Kant Ramdass.

The young man was robbed of $17 million and his body was dumped into the Essequibo river by the coast guards men who were on duty at the time. He was left to die. A 12 member jury returned the unanimous guilty verdict at the Suddie High Court as the three former Coast Guard members stood in disbelief. Two of them continuously declared their innocence in the matter.

Former Coast Guard members Devon Gordon, Sherwin Hart, and Deon Greenidge now all face death by hanging.

The Prosecutor used statements that the men gave to police on the day that they were found with the money that belonged to the man. Those statements detailed how the murder took place and how the men remained in their boats until the man’s body disappeared under the brown waters of the Essequibo river.

The incident took place in 2009.

Guyana has not enforced a death sentence in over 15 years.
