The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation plans to increase its public relations and sensitization exercises in communities which border neighboring Venezuela, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Todd told the National Assembly’s Committee of Supply.
During the consideration of budget estimates, Opposition Member of Parliament, Amanza Walton- Desir questioned the allocations for the sensitization exercise that the government has planned for bordering regions in the face of threats from Venezuela, which continues to claim Guyana’s territory.
“This is to bring them up to speed with the controversy that Venezuela has over the validly of the 1899 award and giving them an historical perspective helping them to understand clearly understand our position and what we are doing in terms of what we are in protecting our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Foreign Affairs Minister noted.
But MP Walton-Desir queried the frequency of the exercise, since many persons in the Hinterland regions are not aware of the public relations drive carried out by the Government. In response, Mr. Todd said there had been a slight pause in the campaign due to flooding in some areas.

“So, what we have had is a slight pause due to flooding in some of the regions as well as the COVID-19 but this year we are going to ensure that we get back on track. We have a very active programme planned for 2004,” Ms. Desir, noted.
In addition to the local sensitization exercise, the Minister said that there will so be similar exercises on an international level
Further, Opposition MP Walton-Desir emphasized the need for the exercise to be consistent and sustained and not be done in an inconsistent manner.
The Foreign Minister said his Ministry will be partnering with other local groups and persons to ensure that Guyana’s message and positions are made clear locally and internationally.
Guyana’s case against Venezuela seeking a final settlement of the border controversy remains before the International Court.
