Ten months after she was busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with more than 20 pounds of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking, former media worker Zanneel Williams is expected to face sentencing after changing her plea to guilty.
The 26-year-old woman had initially pleaded guilty to the cocaine trafficking charge when she was first arrested and taken before the Court in April 2022. However, one month later, she changed that plea to not guilty.
When the matter was called last Friday, the young woman informed the Court that she wanted to change her plea again.
Having entered the new guilty plea, the Magistrate ordered that she returns to Court on the 27th February, when the sentence will be handed down.
After her initial arrest, she was committed to psychiatric evaluation, and was deemed fit to stand trial.
Williams was a outgoing passenger to New York city when she was nabbed by agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit with the large quantity of cocaine in her carry-on suitcase and another portion strapped to her body.
She had been on the radar of CANU agents for several months, as she made frequent trips between Guyana and the US.
Her arrest also led to the arrests of a Customs Officer and a CANU agent. The two have always maintained their innocence and their trials are still ongoing.
