Four years in jail for Sophia man who caused death of pensioner by dangerous driving

A Sophia handyman will spend the next four years in jail after pleading guilty to causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving.

35-Year-Old, Kenneth Johnson, made his first appearance before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan this afternoon and opted not to waste the Court’s time.  He pleaded guilty to the charge of causing the death of 72-year-old Joycelyn Joseph, by dangerous driving along Brickdam.

The Court heard that on the 2nd January 2018, along the Brickdam Public Road, Johnson drove motorcar PLL 2838 in manner dangerous to the public and that caused the death of the elderly woman, who was crossing the road at the time on her way to join the pension payment line.

The Court also heard that the car was unregistered.

The incident occurred around 4:30am and the impact of the collision ripped the woman’s body a part as she was dragged for more than 100 feet.

When asked in Court, whether he had anything to say, the convict offered apologies to the woman’s family and said he really did not see her as she was crossing the dark roadway.

The Chief Magistrate handed down the four year sentence just after the man’s guilty plea and apology.
