Fraud charge against PS Hicks dismissed; Complainant declines to offer evidence

Almost a year after she was charged for fraud, the charge against the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sharon Hicks has been dismissed.

The dismissal of the charge followed the decision by the virtual complainant to no longer offer evidence in the matter.

Hicks was arrested and later charged following allegations that she demanded $200,000 from a security contractor in order for him to be granted contracts by the Ministry.

She had always maintained her innocence. But in an initial release on the matter, the Guyana Police Force had stated that she was held for questioning during a sting operation that saw the money being sent to her office and the Police moving in just after.

The security contractor had claimed that his father was the original contractor for security at the Ministry and after his father’s death, he took over the company and continued to bid for contracts.

The man claimed that he was approached by the Permanent Secretary who made the demands for monthly payments. Hicks always denied the allegations.

She was sent on leave from her job after the charge was instituted against her. It is unclear whether she will return to the job.
