GDF ranks to face sanctions for refusing COVID-19 vaccines

Although the Government has made it clear that the COVID-19 vaccines are not mandatory, the Guyana Defence Force through its Central Management Committee has made a decision to institute sanctions against those officers and ranks who are refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

In an internal memo issued to Commanders this afternoon from the Force’s top brass, they were told that all members of the GDF who are refusing the vaccines are to be interviewed and told of “disincentives that will follow and possible sanctioning by the Force”.

Additionally, only vaccinated soldiers will be permitted on transportation belonging to the GDF and vaccinated persons are to be served meals first at the bases.

The memo instructs Commanders to reorganize the barracks at the various bases in such a way that the vaccinated soldiers will be housed separately from those who are not vaccinated.

The GDF measures are to take effect from next Monday.

While members of the GDF and Joint Services are listed as frontline workers, many of them have not submitted themselves to be vaccinated.

The Government has been stepping up its campaign to get more persons vaccinated against COVID-19.
