With the number of coronavirus cases rising in the country steadily, the Guyana Defence Force will be joining the Police in encouraging citizens to follow the COVID-19 national measures.

During a press conference hosted by the National COVID-19 Task Force, GDF Chief of Staff Brigadier Godfrey Bess said the GDF will be working with the Police and Civil Society groups to get citizens to pay attention to the guidelines and follow them.

“The GDF will deploy no less than 500 troops alongside relevant stakeholders and partners and we will interface with citizens utilizing a thought cogent approach to ensure that citizens wear mask and wear them properly, adhere to the social distancing and the curfew guidelines and no social events”, the Chief of Staff said.

Although the COVID-19 measures have been in place for months, there have been reports of hotels hosting poolside social events and bars opening for private parties. The Guyana Police Force has faced a mountain of criticism for not doing enough to enforce the COVID-19 measures. Police Commissioner Nigel Hoppie said the Police Force will play its part.

With the support of the Guyana Defence Force now, there is expected to be joint services patrols across the country to ensure the guidelines are followed.
