Three men, ages 46, 69 and 73 are the latest COVID-19 fatalities in Guyana. The three deaths were recorded yesterday and bring to 85, the total number of deaths from Coronavirus in Guyana.
The increase in fatalities over the past two months has raised serious questions about the efforts to fight the disease in Guyana.
41 COVID-19 related deaths were recorded in September, making it the deadliest month for the pandemic in Guyana since the first case was recorded back in March.
The 3 deaths yesterday along with 35 new cases come at a time when the government is making moves to reopen the country’s international airports and has reduced the curfew hours.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has attributed the spike in deaths to more persons with underlying conditions contracting the virus.
At a press conference yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Phillips said there is no doubt that COVID-19 is a killer and therefore every citizen must safeguard and protect their own life by wearing a face mask and following the Ministry of Health’s guidelines and measures.
The Government has come under criticism over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as the spread continues and the death toll climbs.
