GECOM issues warning about persons pretending to be Commission staffers

As Guyana faces the possibility of early elections, the Guyana Elections Commission today announced that it has received reports of persons pretending to be working for the Elections Commission, who have been soliciting information from citizens.

The Elections Commission in a statement said it does not currently have any field exercise underway and therefore citizens need to be alert and not divulge personal information to persons visiting their homes.

Persons from Regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and six have contacted the Elections Commission about the pretenders.

“Please be advised that the Commission is not engaged in any such field exercise and is therefore urging citizens to be extremely cautious and not to provide any information those persons as their motive is unknown and can be potentially harmful”.

The Commission said concerned persons could contact the Public Relations Officer on 223-9653 for more details and information.

GECOM has been meeting to discuss its preparedness for early elections in wake of the no-confidence vote in the National Assembly.  The Commission has not yet provided a timeline for a possible elections date.
