The three opposition-nominated Elections Commissioners have agreed to meet the Leader of the Opposition under the condition that their removal will not be up for discussion.
The Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed had hoped to meet with the three opposition-nominated Elections Commissioners – Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman – on Sunday. However, the Commissioners declined the invitation to meet at the WIN party headquarters, suggesting that they prefer to meet at a neutral venue.
In a letter dated Saturday, January 31, 2026, the three Commissioners said there was no basis for a meeting to discuss their status as Commissioners on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) – the main opposition party in the National Assembly – has repeatedly underscored the need for the three Commissioners, who were nominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), and later the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC,) to be replaced by Commissioners nominated by WIN. But the Commissioners are contending there is no legal basis for their removal.
“We the current commissioners of GECOM are cognizant of WIN’s public pronouncements about our status and your calls for our resignation, in addition to some disparaging remarks. In these circumstances, we do not accept that there is any basis for a meeting to discuss our status as Commissioners,” the Elections Commissioners wrote.
However, Alexander, Corbin and Trotman said they are disposed to meeting with Mohamed in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition to discuss matters pertaining to the Elections Commission, but not their status on the Commission.
“Recognizing your status as Leader of the Opposition we accept our responsibility, are happy to and we are hereby agreeing to meet with your and or your representatives on all matters pertaining to GECOM, other than our status which is a sine qua non subject to legislative or judicial intervention,” the Commissioners wrote.
The Leader of the Opposition had extended an invitation to the Elections Commissioners on Friday, one day after he met with the Chairman of GECOM, Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh.
During that meeting, the Elections Chairman admitted that she has no power to remove the three GECOM Commissioners, who were nominated by the PNCR, and later the APNU+AFC when they made up the main opposition.
At least one of the current Opposition nominated Commissioners has stated that if they are being called upon to resign, then the Chairman should also resign because the same process that allowed for their nomination to the position, allowed for her nomination.
