Three days after the Guyana Elections Commission engaged Health Officials from the National COVID-19 Task Force on a proposal to add six more workstations to the Arthur Chung Convention Centre for the vote recount, the Commission is still awaiting a report from the health authorities.
GECOM reached out to the Task Force for advice on its proposal to ensure it is distancing guidelines hat are being encouraged as part of the fight against the coronavirus.
There are 10 current workstations in operation and the Elections Commission is hoping that the additional 6 stations would assist in fast tracking the recount. Areas within the conference centre were identified for the additional workstations.
The health officials have now been accused by some of the political parties of dragging their feet on the matter.
Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence on Saturday said it is the professionals who would have to offer advice. She denied accusations that the Task Force was using the Coranavirus as an excuse to slow down the recount.
Minister Lawrence said there are over 100 cases of Coronavirus in Guyana and 10 deaths and that proves that the virus is real and people should ensure their safety is always placed first.
