The Guyana Elections Commission is getting ready to roll out advertisements calling on qualified persons to fill the position of Chief Elections Officer.
A Senior Official of the Elections Commission told News Source that from all appearances GECOM is heading in that direction. The last Chief Elections Officer was Mr. Gocool Boodoo. His contract with the Commission expired in April. He worked with the Commission for 20 years and the Opposition parties indicated that they did not support efforts to have him return to the post.
There are reports that Boodoo has been making moves to get the job back but the Elections Commission may be distancing himself from him and those efforts.
The Senior GECOM official said if Boodoo wants the job back, the commission cannot prevent him from applying for the position when the vacancy is announced.
The Government was pushing to keep Boodoo in place but the Opposition parties pointed to a number of problems that took place at the last three elections under Boodoo’s watch including the last elections when Boodoo was getting ready to announce the PPP being awarded more seats that the Opposition in parliament although the combined opposition parties had pulled in more votes.
The Alliance for Change and A Partnership for National Unity have both said it was time for Boodoo to go. Opposition Leader David Granger said last week that the APNU does not intend to change its position.
