GECOM advertises for new Chief Elections Officer

Less than a month after deciding that it was not going to renew the contract of its last Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Boodoo, The Guyana Elections Commission has started a search for a new Chief Elections Officer.

The Commission has started to place ads in the newspaper announcing the vacancy for the position. In one of the ads appearing in the daily newspapers, the Commission states that the Chief Elections Officer is required to play the key leadership role in the Secretariat of the Guyana Elections Commission with responsibility for implementing all aspects of its operations and ensuring that results achieved are consistent with the Laws of Guyana and the policies determined by the Chairman and the Commission.

The vacancy notice also states that the Chief Elections Officer will act as the primary point of contact between the Guyana Elections Commission and the staff members of the secretariat and the new CEO will participate in the representation of the Commission’s policies and activities in interactions with stakeholders and other interest groups including political parties, Non-Governmental organisations, donor agencies, International agencies in matters relating to the operations of the Elections Commission.

The Commission has asked interested persons to visit its website www.gecom.org.gy for additional information and full details about the position.

The closing date for applications has been given as 30th September, 2013.

The Chairman of the Commission had explained that he would be moving to place ads in the media for the position after the Commission decided not to renew the contract for the last Chief Elections Officer who spent close to two decades in the employ of the Guyana Elections Commission. Boodoo had been criticized by some commissioners for problems that appeared in the tabulation of votes at the last two General Elections.

His “mistake” in the tabulation of votes at the last elections almost gave the Peoples Progressive Party the majority in Parliament when the combined Opposition had pulled the larger number of votes. It was the Opposition nominated member of the Commission Vincent Alexander who noticed the inaccuracy and had it corrected before the final results were announced.

The Opposition parties had made it clear that they had no confidence in Boodoo being returned to the Commission although the PPP nominated members of the six member Commission wanted him to return. The Chairman was forced to cast the deciding vote and he voted against renewing Boodoo’s contract.
