As the Covid-19 vaccination campaign intensifies, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony today announced that the government has been in contact with various suppliers to make more vaccines available locally.
During his Covid-19 update, Dr. Anthony said so far 212,541 persons have received their first shot of one of the vaccines while 77,980 have received both doses, making those persons fully immunized.
“I know that earlier we had put on the card for people to come back after 12 weeks but the guidance is anytime between 4 weeks to 12 weeks that you can come for that second dose once you have received an AstraZeneca as the first dose. Similarly, we still have a few persons who have receive their Sinopharm vaccine, but they haven’t come together to get their second dose…So we want to appeal to those persons to come and to get that second dose,” The Health Minister urged.
Further, the Health Minister said the 100,000 first shot doses of the Sputnik vaccine which arrived yesterday is being rolled out this week and he is hopeful that the 2nd shot doses will be here by this weekend.
“In terms of the Sputnik V second dose, we continue to work with the supplier to see how fast we can get the second dose in. We have already paid for these second doses it is just a matter of getting it supplied into Guyana,” the Health Minster said.
Dr. Athony said the government has also purchased 100,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.
The Health Minister said he is still concerned that the vaccination rollout in Region 10 has not picked up the pace.
Only 12.5% of the region’s population has been vaccinated so far, making it the lowest vaccination rate in the country.
