Minister of Local Government, Priya Manickchand, has announced plans to close the Haags Bosch landfill site in 2029, as the Government explores new and modern waste disposal.
During the consideration of the Budget estimates, the Minister said while the administration will not prematurely close the site, other options are already being explored.
She said the Government plans to consult with experts this year to also examine the Lusignan landfill site with a view to expand and modernize that site.
The Lusignan landfill site currently sees just over 150 tonnes of waste per day being dumped there, while the Haags bosch site sees well over 1100 tonnes of waste per day.
“Haags Bosch was designed to have three cells, 1, 2 and 3, the first two cells have finished, so what we are trying to do is not only close them out but cover them and beautify them. We just started using cell 3 and that is in the design so when that is filled, we will close it but we don’t have a plan to close it prematurely,” the Minister stated.
Additionally, Minister Manickchand said the Government is hoping to maintain and construct eight new landfill sites across the country, so as to reduce the number of waste being disposed at Haags Bosche.
She admitted that residents in nearly communities have been complaining about the foul scent from the Haags Bosch site. Manickchand said the issue is being addressed.
“Communities like Eccles, Providence, Prospect, Winsdoor estate that was getting smells in the community and residential areas, that is no longer happening, what we are getting is a foul smell on the highway and experts in the Ministry says they are working on some solutions and I just them but if we can’t get the solutions from them, then we will go further afield,” the Minister stated.

The Local Government Minister stated further that the Government will also be introducting waste management laws this year, which will cover garbage disposal and recycling.
“So, landfill sites are getting enormous attention because we understand that one of the biggest issues residents faces in communities is how reliable and predictable their garbage collection has been and how inconveniencing it is for them when they have overflowing garbage in their surroundings,” the Minister stated.
The Minister said new waste disposable methods such as recycling and separation are being considered.
