Four months after the Government got approval for its massive $1.558 Trillion budget, it has returned to the National Assembly seeking an additional $54.8 Billion in supplementary funding.
The Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh laid the supplementary budget paper in the National Assembly this afternoon.
The supplementary funds are being sought to support the Government’s “development agenda” and will cater for a number of Government programme across several government Ministries including the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Agriculture, Public Works, Health and Home Affairs.
In the supplementary budget, an additional $4.5 Billion is being sought for the Ministry of Agriculture, and of that sum, $3B will be going to the ailing Guyana Sugar Corporation, while $807M, will go to the Guyana Rice Development Board, (GRDB).
Under the Ministry of Public Works, the Government is seeking additional funds to accelerate works for miscellaneous roads and drainage as well as hinterland roads and $496M for the maintenance of hinterland airstrips
Additionally, the government wants additional funds for the Ministry of Public Utilities for coastal water supply, and will also be asking the National Assembly for more money for the Ministry of Housing for Infrastructure development and Buildings.
The Government also wants a further $60m for the Ministry of Home Affairs for the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, (CANU).
Under the Ministry of Health, the Government is seeking approval for the rental of a number of buildings.
