Government threatens de-registration of dredges and withholding of licenses over non-declaration of gold

President Irfaan Ali has directed that immediate action be taken to ensure that all gold miners fully comply with their obligations to declare all gold produced in 2025.

The Office of the President in a statement said all registered dredges with no declaration will be de-registered, and all foreign miners operating illegally in Guyana must be identified for prosecution and expulsion.

The statements by the President were made today during a meeting the President hosted with Ministry of Natural Resources officials and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.

It was noted at the meeting that some Brazilian miners operating in Guyana have had very low or no declarations, and those miners have 24 hours to comply fully with the laws of Guyana and the requirement to declare to the Guyana Gold Board.

Additionally, the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association and the Ministry of Natural Resources will be working together to ensure that all miners in every category operating in Guyana are registered with the Ministry, and further, that they all have a local bank account.

GGDMA President, Ronaldo Alphonso, said he is urging the mining public to be compliant and to sell their gold to legitimate sources to sustain the mining sector for generations to come.

In a statement this afternoon, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission call on miners and stakeholders, including traders, to present themselves at the Commission’s office for the purpose of updating their personal records.

The GGMC said such records include, but are not limited to, mailing address, electronic mail address(es), telephone contact number(s), and banking details. The obligation to ensure that this information is accurate and current rests solely with the licence or permit holder.

The GGMC said all updates must be completed no later than 31 January 2026, and non-compliance with the requirement shall result in the suspension of the relevant licences and or permits.
