Government wants public servants to resume full time duties

As the government moves ahead with the reopening of the country, it is pushing for all public servants to return to their jobs full time, effectively ending a rotation and shift system that was put in place in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a memo seen by News Source, staff members of the Local Government Ministry and all of its Departments and the Regional Democratic Councils have been told that they’ll be resuming full-time work during the regular working hours.

The workers have also been informed that the transportation system that was implemented to assist them to get to work safely will be discontinued and they will have to take their own transportation to work while observing health and safety guidelines.

The move is coming at a time when the number of coronavirus cases and deaths have been rising steadily, with total active cases over 1000 and the death toll reaching 100 as of 12 noon today.

The Opposition is not in support of the government’s move and has described it as reckless.

“We have learnt with great alarm that the PPP government has mandated that all public servants return to work full time even as the cases and deaths due to COVID-19 are rising alarmingly. This is irresponsible, reckless and endangers the lives of every public servant, every member of their families and households and everyone who they come into contact with”, Opposition MP Corretta McDonald told reporters today.

The APNU+AFC MP said she cannot understand the sudden haste in forcing public servants to return to work full-time as the pandemic continues.

Many of the workers have complained to the Guyana Public Service Union about the move.

In the past two weeks, a number of government departments were forced to temporarily shut down their operations after persons were tested positive for COVID-19.
