The power supply situation in the country is to be given special attention by the new PPP Civic government, which has indicated that it is already looking at several initiatives to stabilize the power supply to consumers.
Acknowledging that the Guyana Power and Light company is still in a problematic position when it comes to power supply, Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill said there is a clear need for additional power to be added to the national grid,
He said “we have to find the money to keep GPL going because baseload was not added in any significant way in five years. You have housing development and additional businesses coming on stream and every end-user requires more power. So it’s not just maintaining but its adding baseload and any solution at GPL must not just be maintenance but we must also add baseload”, Mr. Edghill said.
The Works Minister said he is not pleased with the situation that he has found at GPL but he wants to assure citizens that the Government will be making the necessary interventions to keep the lights on.
And Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar said it is clear that renewable energy must be closely examined to assist with an improved power system.
He said he believes the situation with GPL would have better if the Amaila hydropower project had continued.
That hydro project was initiated under the previous PPP government but encountered a number of financial problems in its development stage.
