GTT and Digicel in tit for tat chat over Mobile Money App

Digicel Guyana has denied reports from GTT that it has blocked its customers from accessing the GTT Mobile Money app on their Digicel devices.

In a full page advertisement on Tuesday, GTT said it has noted “with concern what seems to be an action by Digicel Guyana to restrict its customers from accessing Mobile Money”.

GTT said it believes it is the right of customers to choose their services and applications and it does not believe Digicel should stand in the way of that choice.

But in a statement Tuesday afternoon, Digicel fired back at GTT and said it is up to GTT to ensure that its applications are working correctly on all networks and that is not the responsibility of Digicel.

The company said it fully supports the notion of a level playing field in the telecommunications sector and “we are of the view that this will be beneficial to Guyanese in more ways than one.”

“We would like to emphasize that the GTT App and its functionality is the responsibility of GTT to ensure it works properly”, Digicel implored.

According to Digicel, the other mobile service provider, GTT, made contact last Thursday for the first time about the apparent problems although the App has been in the market since October.

“And we responded by saying we would investigate and try and help”, the Digicel statement noted.

According to Digicel, it is “disappointed in GTT’s approach to this matter”, but it welcomes GTT’s “very recent conversion to customers’ choice and looks forward to this new approach to be applied to residential landlines and Liberalisation of the Telecoms sector so every Guyanese can enjoy the benefits of improved communications in Guyana rather than the current monopoly which restrict customers’ choice.”

GTT maintains that the Mobile Money app is a free app that is available in the play store and through a toll free number. But the Digicel customers have been facing problems downloading the app. The company wants good sense to prevail.

GTT still maintains a monopoly on data and land line services in the country. That monopoly is expected to come to an end when the telecommunications sector is liberalized with the passage of new legislation. Both companies have indicated their eagerness for the passage of the legislation.
