The post-mortem examination conducted on the body of 45-year-old Peter Headley who was killed in police custody has found that he died from a single gunshot wound that perforated his lungs.
Headley was shot dead by a Police officer while being taken in his own car to the Police station on suspicion of being involved in a robbery.
The Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility is probing the incident. While the post-mortem examination confirmed the deadly gunshot wound, family members were not told of an entry point to the body.
After he was arrested by the Police, Headley was told to sit in the passenger seat of his car. Two Police officers joined him in the vehicle, with one taking over the driving of the vehicle while the other sat in the backseat behind the suspect.
The Police officers who were in the car claim that while the man was being driven to the station for questioning, he attempted to reach for what they thought was a weapon under the passenger seat. The Policeman who was seated behind him was the one who shot him dead.
No weapon was found in the car.
Police sources familiar with the investigations have told News Source that there were several inconsistencies in the version of the shooting incident as presented by the two Policemen.
One source said the story of the Police Officers sound fictitious and the probe by the Office of Professional Responsibility is closely examining the statements along with the post-mortem report.
Family members have already indicated that they do not believe the Police version of events and they are very convinced that it was a cold-blooded murder.
