Guyana “deeply grieved” by deadly pirate attack against Guyanese fishermen in Suriname -Pres. Granger

With the search ongoing for thirteen other Guyanese fishermen who are all feared dead following a pirate attack on the high seas in neighbouring Suriname, Guyana’s President, David Granger today said his government has been in contact with its Surinamese counterparts and is paying close attention to the tragic loss of life.

During a brief interview with members of the press at the Pegasus Hotel, the President said “we are deeply grieved by the tragedy. Clearly some Guyanese have been victims and we have been in touch with the Surinamese government and also the Surinamese Police Authority. Our Police in the B’ Division, which is the East Berbice/Corentyne Division, are in touch with the families and they plan to observe formal mourning. It is a massacre and a great tragedy”.

Mr. Granger said Guyana has been successful over the past three years in curbing the piracy problem here, “so this has come as a great setback and we extend sympathies to the families”.

He said the government will continue to be in touch with the Surinamese government as it tries to gather more information on the tragedy in the neighbouring country. A more formal statement from the Guyana government is expected by tomorrow.

Sixteen Guyanese fishermen were attacked last week while plying their trade in Surinamese waters. The bodies of three of them were discovered late yesterday in Suriname.

It is believed that the pirates who attacked the fishermen may also be Guyanese. One survivor who appeared on Surinamese television, said based on the men’s accent, he is convinced that they are also Guyanese.

The matter continues under probe.
