The Guyana Police Force has replaced the Commanding officer in Region One, just two weeks after an illegal airstrip and 4.4 tonnes of cocaine was discovered buried at that airstrip by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit.
The Police Force has confirmed that Senior Superintendent, Himnauth Sawh has been replaced as the Commander of the Police Division in Region One by Superintendent, Krishnadat Ramana.
It was Ramana who made it known to the media in a WhatsApp group message, that he had taken over the Command of the Police Division in the region.
There have been reports that a number of other Police Officers in the Region One area have also been replaced.
Since the massive drug bust, reports have surfaced about the alleged involvement of Police Officers in the Region One area, in facilitating the construction of the illegal airstrip at Matthew’s Ridge and the movement of illegal flights in and out of the area.
The flights are suspected to have originated in Venezuela with the large drug shipment over a number of days.
Investigators from CANU believe persons in the community were aware of the illegal airstrip and the drug flights.
Last week, Senior Law Enforcement sources confirmed to News Source that Police ranks were being probed and that the Police Commissioner and the Crime Chief have been informed of the investigations.
The Guyana Police Force was left out of the operation that led to the discovery of the airstrip and the drugs. CANU worked along with the Guyana Defence Force with support of the US Drug Enforcement Agency to carry out the operation.
