Guyana Prison Officers for U.S prison riot training

The Guyana Prison Service has accepted an invitation from the United States government to attend the 18th Mock Prison Riot (MPR) to be held from May 1st to 4th, 2016 in the USA.

Natural Resources Minister, Raphael Trotman announced Cabinet’s approval on Wednesday during a post Cabinet media briefing.

Held every spring at the decommissioned West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, West Virginia, the Mock Prison Riot features hands-on training and technology exposure to corrections, law enforcement, military, and public safety practitioners from around the world.

At the Mock Prison Riot, exhibitors and operators work together in a living, breathing environment, continually pushing the envelopes of tactics and technology.

The event facilitates tactical training, technology deployment and demonstrations. The announcement came as Guyana is recovering from what is being considered the worst prison riot in history.

Last week 17 prisoners lost their lives and several others were injured during a fiery riot inside the Camp Street Jail.

The NPR is expected to increase the capacity for the Guyana Prison Service to respond to these types of unrest or similar emergencies.

Among those officers attending the conference are: Chief Prison Officers Peter Barker, Shawn Charles, Kirk Joseph and Principal Officer Lionel Kale. Feedback garnered from the mock prison riot are expected to be used to shape the law, enforcement and correction industry in Guyana and the world.
