The Government has announced that Local Government Elections Day, March 18, 2016 will not be a public holiday.

Local Government elections are not on the same scale as national elections and Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman today said the government sees no need or reason for the day to be declared a public holiday. Persons will be expected to vote at times convenient to them during their workday. He was at the time speaking at the post cabinet media briefing.

But while, the local government elections day will not be a public holiday, the Ministry of Education has announced that all public schools will close their doors for the easter holiday on March 17.

Schools were expecting to close their doors on March 18, but because most schools will be used as polling stations, the Ministry has taken a decision to begin the easter vacation for students, one day earlier.  Schools will reopen on April 4, 2016.

Local Government Elections will be taking place across the country in the 9 municipalities and the various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils.
