Guyana remains committed to defending its territorial integrity -President Ali tells India TV

President Irfaan Ali recently reaffirmed the Guyana’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and utilizing its oil wealth for transformative development.

During a recent interview on DD India TV Network, President Ali addressed the ongoing border controversy with Venezuela and outlined ambitious plans to leverage Guyana’s resources for the benefit of its people.

On the long-standing border controversy, which is currently before the International Court of Justice for a final juridical settlement, President Ali said Venezuela has made a controversy out of something that belongs to Guyana. He said the neighbouring country needs to play a more active role int he case before the ICJ.

“We have encouraged Venezuela to go to the ICJ… and to respect the outcome,” Ali emphasized, underscoring the importance of resolving the matter peacefully. The President affirmed Guyana’s commitment to the rule of law.

Addressing questions about Guyana’s newfound oil wealth, President Ali dismissed concerns about its environmental impact, reaffirming the country’s commitment to sustainability. “We still will be carbon negative,” he stated, pointing to Guyana’s vast forest reserves and its role as a global leader in climate action.

He said oil revenues are being invested to improve the lives of Guyanese citizens.

“We have more than 30,000 of our citizens on scholarship. We have just made university education free,” he announced.

It was noted that the investments, coupled with plans to cut energy costs by half in the coming year, aim to position Guyana as a competitive hub for businesses and industries. Venezuela continues to claim Guyana’s oil rich Essequibo region.

Although the border controversy remains under international scrutiny, the President reaffirmed the defence of Guyana’s sovereignty through peaceful and legal means.
