Guyanese man dies after being robbed, beaten and set on fire in Trinidad

A 35-year-old Guyanese man, who lived between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, died on Saturday in Trinidad after spending more than a week in a critical condition in the San Fernando Hospital in the island.

The man, Deokaran Sharma Seokaran was reportedly attacked, beaten, robbed and set on fire on November 29. The burns took over 90% of his body according to relatives and he remained in a critical condition right up to the time of his death on Saturday.

His sister, Sally Seokaran, in an online post said her brother appeared to have been doused with gasolene and set ablaze by three unknown men after they robbed him.

She started a Go Fund Me drive to assist with his medical bills while hospitalized. She was able to raise just over US$2000.

The man has left to mourn a young wife and two children.

Family members are confused over the attack and want to know if it may have been a case of mistaken identity. One family member  said while they could understand the robbery, the dousing with gasolene and setting him on fire after beating him, troubles them a lot.
