Guyanese winner of Anthony N. Sabga 2026 Award to establish Mobile Health Units in Georgetown and Miami

Guyanese born and US-based Pharmaceutical Developer, Dr Niven Narain has announced that he will use the US$35,000 cash prize he received as part of his Anthony Sabga Award to establish mobile women’s health units in Georgetown and Miami.

Dr. Narain was awarded for using Artificial Intelligence to develop targeted pharmaceuticals with the potential to transform lives globally. 

The award ceremony was held in Guyana on Saturday evening.

The 2026 laureates are Pharmaceutical Developer Dr Niven Narain, (Guyana), Visual Artist, Sheena Rose of Barbados (Arts & Letters), Telecoms Entrepreneur, Dean Nevers of Jamaica (Entrepreneurship), Social Activist, Shamelle Rice of Barbados (Public & Civic Contributions), and Climate Scientist, Professor Tannecia Stephenson of Jamaica (Joint, Science & Technology). 

Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr Narain said his grandmother’s death from cancer affected him deeply, and he wants to play a part in ensuring that women receive the care they need.

“Tonight, I honor my grandmother in taking the funds that are going to be received from this award together with other members of my family to start the Rukhminia Latchman Foundation for Women’s Health which will be dedicated to improving access and essential care for women,” Dr. Narain noted.

He announced that the first initiative will bring mobile medical services directly to working mothers, especially single mothers.

Patron of the Anthony N Sabga Awards, Mr A. Norman Sabga, promised to match the donation to ensure expanded care for women.

 “I will match your donation in the creation of this foundation to be based in Guyana and Miami under your guidance we look forward to seeing it growing and growing,” Sabga said.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who delivered the feature address at the award ceremony, said the annual occasion remains one of the region’s most distinguished celebrations, honouring the work of outstanding Caribbean men and women.
