Guyanese woman and daughter found strangled to death in Suriname

Police investigators in neighbouring Suriname are probing the murder of a Guyanese woman and her young child. Their bodies were found on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old woman has been identified Leelawattie Sookhoo. She had been living in Nieuw Amsterdam for a number of years. Her daughter was just 10-years-old.

The bodies of the two were found in the woman’s house. Police suspect that the woman’s 22-year-old boyfriend may have been responsible for the double murder.

According to reports out of Suriname, the man was recently heard arguing with the woman over a visit by her ex-husband.

Relatives in Guyana have been informed of the murder and are expected to travel to the neighbouring country.
