With some of its current city councilors switching sides and heading over to the PPP for the upcoming local elections, the APNU is looking to some new faces within its camp to hold on to City Council seats.

Chairman of the Guyana Youth and Student Movement, Kibwe Copeland is one of the new faces for the APNU in the municipal race. The GYSM is the youth arm of the People’s National Congress.

Copeland will be contesting for the Constituency 14 seat, which covers South Ruimveldt Park. He said he is ready for the campaign leading up to the June local elections.

“This is my first time running for Local Government Elections. I was part of Local Democracy at the RDC Level, that’s after the Regional and General Elections in 2011. What sparked my interest of course is the need to play a part in local democracy, and understand, of course, local democracy is under a threat, and for that main reason myself along with other young Councillors and even senior folks, said we must come forward and give our energy, give our vibes, and of course our intuition, our knowledge and support towards local democracy”, Copeland said.

The APNU candidate said he is firmly of the view that young people have a pivotal role to play in politics and should not stay away from seeking elected office.

“People like to say that politics is an old man’s game, a crook’s game, but I have a different view. I believe politics is where you have a place or a role to actually make things better for your country”, Copeland noted.

Another new face for the APNU is Life Coach and Counselor, Phillip Drayton. He said he believes it is time that citizens work better in the interest of the nation’s capital and he wants to have a say in that development.

He said “I have been doing substantial amount of work in the society over the years, and I have a vivid sense of various communities, the issues that they are faced with there, so doing a collaboration with the APNU Parties, I think that it is a very good initiative to see how we can come up with strategic ways to see how best we can help members of society”, Drayton said.

The APNU is also depending on some older candidates to regain their seats on the City Council. Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore is among the candidates for the APNU at the upcoming elections. The current Mayor, Ubraj Narine has opted not to contest the upcoming elections.
