Leader of the recently formed Independent Citizens for Progress (ICP), Bobby Vieira believes that once elected to the municipality of Georgetown, his group will be able to advance much needed change for the country’s capital city, Georgetown.
Vieria stated that while Guyana has been independent for more than fifty years, Georgetown has seen little to no development as the nation’s only city.
“We have been independent for more than 50 years and we continue to see nothing happening for the city. So, it’s best we just make a change and take it from there. The people will see that change which is necessary for us,” he said.
The 67-year-old broadcaster noted that among the group’s aims is to give the citizens of Guyana an alternative option when it comes to voting.
“People would like to see a change, people are tired of the same old story so when something new comes people will want to try it and that is the opportunity, we would like to give to people,” Vieria noted.
Vieria said the citizens of Georgetown and other Local Areas should give independent groups like ICP a change to a difference.
Vieria is running for Constituency 14, however, the ICP is contesting 11 of the 15 constituencies in the nation’s capital.
Meanwhile, Executive Member of The Citizenship Initiative (TCI), Shaz Ally is running as an independent candidate for Constituency One in Georgetown.
Ally told reporters that the major political parties – PPP/C and APNU – that are currently occupying seats in the 65-member National Assembly, should allow individuals, groups and smaller parties an opportunity to manage and develop their constituencies.
Mr. Ally, who lives in Kingston, said he has already crafted a plan for the development of his constituency, and will be using social media to campaign.
“I have been living there for 28 years, and I plan to develop our community. There is always an issue with cleanliness and I have some plans for actual development,” Ally said noting that should he be elected to the council, he will work for the betterment of the city.
Team Guyana National Service was also among the small groups that submitted their lists of candidates to the Returning Officer for the local elections for Georgetown.
