Harbour Bridge GM resigns following damning report on audit and gift purchases

The General Manager of the Demerara Habour Bridge, Rawlston Adams has tendered his resignation according to the Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill.

The Minister said he held two meetings with the General Manager since his resignation.

Minister Edghill is slated to meet with the Chairman of the Board and senior management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge to facilitate the handover by the outgoing General Manager.

The resignation by Adams follows an investigation into the operations of the Asphalt Plant which is managed by the Bridge company.

That audit found evidence of misappropriations in the management of the Asphalt plant and several questionable deals with government and private contractors.

The procurement of a bracelet in 2019 for almost $900,000 for the General Manager with funds from the Bridge was also flagged in the report, which said the purchase was approved by the General Manager himself.

He has since made moves to pay the money back for the International Men’s Day gift.

While the Minister of Public Works appeared to welcome the decision by Mr. Adams to resign, there is no move underway as yet to name a new General Manager.

According to Minister Edghill, “we will just have an interim arrangement”.

It has been reported that there are others who could face termination but Minister Edghill would only confirm that “there will be significant changes in both the management of the bridge and the Asphalt plant.”

The Minister did not say when the additional changes will be made.
