Hughes urges end to bickering between Government and Opposition; Encourages cooperation on national issues

Opposition Member of Parliament, Cathy Hughes today said the time for bickering between the government and Opposition must come to end, and the focus should be on working together for the betterment for every Guyanese citizen.

She said Guyana must not miss the opportunity that is now presented, due to the oil and gas sector, adding that a divided country will only mean that less people in Guyana will benefit.

“Mr. Speaker, we have allowed race and politics to divide our country to our own detriment and if we don’t see that the world is watching on and laughing as our resources are depleted for the benefit of others then these days of debates would be an exercise of futility—another wasted opportunity ,” Mrs. Hughes said.

The AFC Chairman warned that history must not repeat itself and hate must not foster, since that will be the beginning of the end of opportunities for Guyanese in their own country.

She said examples of other countries should be able to encourage politicians to meet in a different way that encourages dialogue and to come to commonality.

“Mr. Speaker at the end of the day my presentation is not about what was done, but really a hope that we can search for a common ground, let us all understanding how we are failing our people, because Mr. Speaker an eye for an eye would just make us all blind,” the former Minister said.

Hughes acknowledged that former government made mistakes, but added that those mistakes must not be used now to determine the country’s direction.

She said while there may be challenges in government, both the Government and the Opposition must be able to work together for the Guyanese people and not just for political reasons.
